Leadership Training and Discipleship

Introduction

So you have a thirst for adventure! Perhaps you dream of impacting your school in an amazing way or of living life to the full. Most of us never dare act on our dreams and scarcely venture to share them or admit to these great inner yearnings. Gull Lake specializes in organizing and guiding leadership experiences. Skilled in practicalities of developing students into leaders, we work with you to reach your goals. We will not drag you through the process – you will have to work hard – but we guarantee to maximize the safety and success of your journey. For those who dare to face their dreams, the LTD experience offers something special beyond the power of words to describe. We invite you to journey with us, dreaming big and following hard after Christ. (Adapted from Adventure Consultants Mount Everest).

The Leadership Training and Discipleship Program is a three-year, experiential learning program for High School Students from across Alberta. During the three years, students are taught about leadership with focuses upon personal development, social justice, evangelism, communication and teamwork through experiences in spiritual formation, cabin leading, inner-city service, mountain hiking and more. The program exists to develop young leaders by connecting them to Christ. If you or someone you know is entering grade ten and has demonstrated a willingness to deepen their faith, contact us to nominate them to participate in this life changing experience today.

Synopsis

This year, there are over 60 students registered in the LTD Program! They are from all over Alberta and continue to be a highlight in the ministry of Gull Lake! The LTD Program works within the context of a Christian camping community where people of a variety of ages come together to follow Christ. It is within this environment that students commit three years of their life to be mentored in their journey of faith in Leadership Development, Spiritual Formation and Social/Global Justice. Over the three years, students will engage the program on five different levels: First, the program looks at discipleship within two training summits each year. Secondly, the students enter a time of reflection on an out trip into the mountains or into the inner-city. Third, students hone their skills through experiential learning both at the camp and in their local church. Fourth, through reflective discovery via year-long projects. And finally, through a year-round relationship with a mentor.

The VISION of the LTD Program

To disciple students to encounter God as life-long, transformed participants in the Kingdom.

And HOW does it happen?

By the grace and leading of the Holy Spirit we gather these youth for 3 years, guiding them to connect with Christ through experiential learning initiatives like mountain hiking and Jr. Cabin Leading practicums, plus formal teaching during LTD Camp and Fall Retreats and reading assignments, and finally through mentoring relationships both while at camp and throughout the rest of the year. It’s practical learning in a highly relational environment!

 The Essential Framework

Camps throughout the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada have developed a common curriculum for discipling students.  It is called the Encountering God Framework (EGF) . The EGF has been launched as a separate online site that can be seen by selecting the link below.

The COST of the LTD Program

The actual cost of the program is $800 per student, however to try and keep the program as accessible as possible the camp subsidises $150 of the cost.  The cost for the student is $650 for the year.  We also hope that the students home church sees a value in the program and will assist in covering the tuition.  We will write a letter to your church on your behalf informing them about the program and the benefits of having one of their youth participate in hope that  they will invest in you as well.  All of this covers the Training Week, Fall Retreat, Spring Retreat, Outtrip, Follow Up Programming, Mentor Support, Practicums, and a T-shirt.

How Do I Apply for the LTD Program ?

Registration for the 2009 LTD program will begin January 1.  To apply you must fill out an application and get 4 references. The application and reference forms can be found on this website under the youth and children drop-down leadership training and discipleship (LTD).
